A big furry thanks goes out to the Tacoma Fire Department for saving one very scared little kitten last night.
Our neighborhood has several feral cats wandering about. My Mom cares for a few of them, making sure they have food and water. She has spayed and neutered a number of them, and has found homes for several others.
Right now, we have a litter of five who are about two months old. My Mom has a home for one of them already, she just needed to coordinate pick up with the man who is taking the kitten.
But the kitten hadn't shown up for meal time the last several days. Mom was afraid maybe someone in the area had trapped it, because we have a few people trapping here.
Yesterday, she said she heard faint meows coming from under her house the night before. So, yesterday, we climbed under her house and heard a kitten crying. The litter mates were hanging around one area, so we went to investigate. The crawl area was too small to get through, so we removed a vent grate from the front of her house to look in.
There it was, it's front end, around it's belly, and one front leg completely tangled in electrical wiring! The wires were wrapped so tight around the poor little guy, it looked as if it was cutting into his skin. It was so tired from fighting, it barely could muster a meow.
She and I fought for a while trying to remove the siding to open an area big enough to get through, but were unsuccessful. After asking a few neighbors, who were also unable to help, we called the Fire Department. Within five minutes, a truck with three Firefighters showed up. They had to cut through the siding, and then cut the wiring to get the kitten out. Then they worked for another thirty minutes or more trying to cut the tangled wiring from the kittens leg. It was a mess!
They were there until after 10:00 PM, working on that poor little kitty.
Once freed, we could see the kitten had dislocated his shoulder trying to get free. We took him to the Emergency Vet Clinic, where he is now getting care.
My Mom spoke with the clinic this morning, and they said kitty had no broken bones and would heal just fine! He's also getting some fluids, as he was dehydrated. Mom estimates he was probably caught under there for at least four days.
She has named the kitten Sparky.
A big thanks to the Firefighters who worked so long to free Sparky. You guys are awesome!
